I loved TEOTFW on Netflix, and similarly enjoyed I Am Not Okay With This, so grabbed the source material, comics by @charlesforsman, as well as Hobo Mom, which was co-written with Max de Radiguès. Great reads, all. Deceptively simple single colour illustrations allow the pathos and tragedy of life for characters in all three of these books to shine through.
I’ll definitely be expanding on these reviews when I get around to posting these on my blog, but just a few content warnings:
TEOTFW: sexual assault, murder, animal abuse.
IANOWT: suicidal ideation, drug use, partner abuse.
HM: attempted sexual assault, family breakdown/ abandonment.
Sound heavy? They are. They’re not the faint of heart, but they’re all compelling reads for adult graphic novel fans looking for some reflections on life, identity, and the very real complications of adulthood in all its forms.
